As part of the #OpenShuhadaSt campaign by activists from groups like the Youth Against Settlements and the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee, the flag of Palestine was raised in occupied Hebron’s Tel Rumeida on Tuesday February 21st to a ten meter high mast as a sign of Palestinian control and identity of the area which illegal Israeli settlers try to take over.
The flag raising – done by Ahmad Azzih with Palestinian and international activists at present – is part of events for the eight year of the Open Shuhada Street campaign. Israel closed the Shuhada Street, a commercial heart of Hebron with hundreds of shops, in 1994 after the massacre of 29 Palestinians by Israeli-American Baruch Goldstein in the Ibrahimi mosque.
An act of terrorism by an illegal Israeli settler led to 23 years of collective punishment on Palestinians and increasing control of the massacre site by Israel and it’s illegal settlers.
According to the campaign coordinator Issa Amro the campaign’s activities this year will include events in four hundred cities and towns around the globe. In Hebron this flag rising will be just the beginning and will be continued in Tel Rumeida, on the Shuhada Street and around the Old City where occupier Israel is trying to push Palestinians away and take control.
