Yousif Shaaban Abu Athra from the al-Shabourah refugee camp was killed as Israel’s occupation forces shelled the small group he was on when they were 300 meters away from the border of Palestine 1948 just after midnight on Wednesday March 22nd.
The incident happened near the village of al-Shokah. Israel’s occupation forces had clear intention to kill – they targeted Abu Ahtra and others with 15 artillery shells.
Our picture of the day shows his burial later on Wednesday.
We reported that at first that he was 18, but sources later have given as his age 15 or 16.
Mohammed Wahid ‘Atallah al-‘Akar(25) was wounded in the same occasion in his chest and abdomen and was transferred into a hospital in a serious condition. He is from the Yibna refugee camp and was found 500 meters away from the border force by medical personnel.
Israeli occupation has tried to claim that those targeted might have tried to ‘plant an explosive device’ – on the Gaza side of the border. This seems like an easily to see through attempt to take attention away from the killing of a child.
Palestinian sources say that those in the group were going to cross the border to Palestine 1948 and seek work there, but this has been denied by the dead teenager’s cousin, who says that their family owns the land on which Yousif was killed.
People do get through relatively regularly, but usually they can stay mere weeks or at most moths before being caught as Israel regularly rounds up people from the besieged Gaza Strip working ‘illegally’ in the Negev towns.
