GAS CYLINDER EXPLOSION CAUSES AT LEAST 7 DEATHS IN THE BESIEGED GAZA STRIP

At least 7 people have died and 20 people have been injured when a gas cylinder exploded and caused part of a house to collapse in the besieged Gaza Strip on Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened in the al-Sabra neighbourhood south of Gaza City.

Local activist @OccuPalGaza says that the house belongs to ‘al-Assi family’ and WAFA News Agency correspondent names the family as ‘Abu Assi’.

The house that partly collapsed is described as ‘dilapidated’.
The tiny coastal enclave of 360 square kilometers is a home to over 2 million people and has been besieged by Israel since 2007, with Egypt keeping up the blockade on the southern border on Israel’s behalf.
.
Electricity has been available only between 4-6 hours per day for years, which has forced the population to relay to gas cylinders – and candles for light; both have caused many devastating accidents in recent years. Several hospitals have closed in recent days after having run out of fuel for their own generators, used when electricity is not available.
